Microsoft's Xbox One all set to get Cortana, TV DVR with Windows 10
Microsoft has announced some major new projects and features that will be released on Xbox One in the upcoming months. According to the Verge, Microsoft revealed that they will be a releasing a redesigned dashboard on the Xbox One's in November which will bring Windows 10 to the console. The software update will focus on speed, performance and simplicity.
The Xbox One dashboard update will also bring Windows 10's Cortana feature. Cortana will require the Kinect sensor for audio controls. Also, a new feature called TV DVR is coming to the console in 2016. The Xbox One users will be able to record TV without requiring any subscription and stream games to any Windows 10 PC.
Microsoft is even allowing Windows 10 PCs to download shows. In addition, Microsoft has unveiled a limited edition Halo-themed Xbox One that comes with many games and a 1TB of storage. The new Xbox will feature metallic blue detailing on both the console and controller and will be available for $499. The new console launches on October 20th and is available for pre-order.
Microsoft has also announced Xbox One chat pad. It is identical to its Xbox 360. Microsoft has not released any pricing or release date details, but pre-orders have started. The company also announced that the select Xbox 360 games will be compatible with Xbox One. All future Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles will be compatible with Xbox One.
Microsoft Windows 10 launch delayed
Chief operating officer Kevin Turner told Japanese news service Nikkei on Wednesday that the new system would be released "early next fall."
Microsoft has not publicly set a firm timetable for the release of Windows 10, but only last week suggested the possibility of an earlier release.
"By next late summer and early fall we'll be able to bring out this particular OS (operating system). That's the current plan of record," Turner told the Credit Suisse Technology Conference last Thursday.
An autumn release would put Windows 10 on track for launch three years after Windows 8, which got a mixed reception as it confused many traditional PC users with a design more suited to tablets.
Microsoft unveiled the name Windows 10 in late September, saying the jump in numbers from 8 to 10 marked a leap as it looks to unify the way people work on tablets, phones and traditional computers.
An early test version of Windows 10 — which blends the traditional look and much-loved start menu with newer features — has been available for download from Microsoft's website for more than two months.
Windows is still a core part of Microsoft's business and dominates the desktop computing market with 1.5 billion users. But the growth of smartphones and tablets means Windows now runs on only about 14% of computing devices worldwide, according to tech research firm Gartner.

Nokia receives regulatory approval in China for transfer of Device & Services division to Microsoft
The acquisition of Nokia’s Device and Services division by Microsoft which was announced on 3rd September 2013 has been long due to the long winded regulatory approval process in major markets. Today, the company has announced that it has received said approval from the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China.
Alongside PRC, Nokia and Microsoft have also received approvals from the European Commission, U.S. Department of Justice amongst others. The deal has been dragged on by Asian regulators particularly India where Nokia also faces tax disputes to the tune of $414 million.
While it was hinted that both Google and Samsung had asked Chinese regulators to ensure that patent licensing terms do not change unfavorably post the transition, Nokia states hat no such request has been made. The regulatory process involves a complete review of Nokia’s patent licensing practices and the Finnish company remains compliant with FRAND (Fair, Reasonable and Non Discriminatory terms) undertakings related to essential patents. The deal is expected to close in April 2014.
Windows 8.1 Update 1 now live for all Windows 8.1 users
Windows 8, the most controversial OS release in the history of Microsoft, has been getting its fixes to better accommodate the needs of desktop users, the dominant platform that runs Windows. Under Steven Sinofsky, Windows 8 was supposedly to inspire OEMs make better consumer hardware that supports touch in all forms, but the Keyboard-mouse users who already had their expensive PCs upgraded to the operating system, only to find it almost unusable with their current setup. This caused a lot of backlash, which led to the Windows 8.1 update that saw the return of the start button, a “Boot to desktop” option and various other enhancements to make desktop users feel comfortable. The new Update 1 to Windows 8.1, which is deemed “mandatory” for all users running Windows 8.1, introduces more enhancements to better the mouse-keyboard experience that the majority longs for.
Some of the important Windows 8.1 features include -
- Now pin full screen metro apps to the taskbar
- Make the taskbar to pop up anywhere
- Metro apps get a title bar and a close button
- New search and power icons on the start screen
- Right click menus for tiles

Xbox One vs PS4 dimensions, design
It towers over everything (though you're advised not to stand it up vertically), and completely dwarfs our smallest electronics like the app-filled Chromecast. Xbox One is a menacing gaming beast that looks like a black Monolith straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's 13.5 in x 10.4 in x 3.2 in and it's completely filled with vents. No Red Ring of Death this time around.

Microsoft Said To Drop Windows Phone Fees For Some Smartphone OEMs

Microsoft has dropped its licensing fees for at least two smartphone OEMs, according to a new report from The Times of India (via Verge), making it much easier for those competing in low-cost markets to build devices sporting Redmond’s mobile OS. The manufacturers are Karbonn and Lava, both partners announced among a group of entry-level device makers that are getting into Windows Phone building as of MWC.
The waved fee would mean that these smartphone OEMs would likely save between $5 and $15 per handset, which is what Microsoft usually charges for a Windows Phone software license. The software giant works out license deals individually and is highly protective of the specifics of each arrangement, so it’s unlikely to ever go on the record either way with respect to a potential removal of the fee altogether for some partners.
The dropping of fees is probably the only way to get some hardware makers to even look at its software, given the competition from the free-to-use Android mobile OS from Google. Both Karbonn and Lava apparently only agreed to come on board with the MS platform after the license fees were dropped, according to the original report. If Redmond is doing it with some of these low-cost partners, than it’s likely also doing it with others, and the plan is clearly designed to help Windows Phone gain some traction in markets where new subdivision Nokia once dominated.
Nokia introduced the heavily Windows Phone-inspired and Windows services-based Nokia X at MWC, as a low-cost entry-level device aimed at these markets. Some suggest MS approves of this and would like to use Android as a way to onboard users to the idea of using its Internet services, as a precursor to getting them on Windows Phone. Others suggest this is just a remainder pipeline product Nokia is releasing on its own that Microsoft will axe once it takes control. Whatever the case, it’s clear from this licensing news that Redmond wants emerging markets in a bad way, and is willing to do what it takes to get it.
No new Windows Phone device at MWC
According to a news report in Recode, the upcoming telecom event MWC may not see launch of any new Windows Phone device.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report says that Nokia, Microsoft and Microsoft's Windows Phone partners have no plans to launch any new model based on the platform.
The report contradicts previous rumours that Nokia was gearing up to launch three new Windows Phone devices, namely the Lumia 930, 630 and 635. Nokia was rumoured to launch the dual-sim 'Moneypenny' Windows Phone device as well.
However, given that Microsoft is expected to detail Windows Phone 8.1 at its BUILD conference scheduled for April, it's unlikely that new devices running the OS would be launched or announced before the event.
Nokia is hosting a press event on February 24 at MWC where it is expected to launch a new smartphone based on a forked version of Android likely to be called Nokia X. Nokia's official teasers and leaked press images feature a green theme hinting at Android. Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia is still in its final stages at this point in time.

Nokia Android phone’s name ‘confirmed’- Nokia X
NOKIA X
The device's press render features a green colour variant of the phone complete with the Nokia Xbranding also in green colour. Nokia's social media account pages too had switched to a green colour theme during the last weekend, though it has now been removed. The green colour is often associated with Android and perhaps Nokia intends to signal the arrival of the Android-based Nokia X with its upcoming campaign.
Nokia's Android smartphone is said to have a Windows Phone-like interface and will not have access to Google Play Store. Instead, Nokia is said to have added its own app store -- featuring popular apps like Skype, Facebook etc --- in the device.
According to earlier reports, Nokia X will have a 4-inch screen with 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor, 512MB RAM, 5MP camera, Bluetooth 4.0, Android 4.4 (KitKat) operating system and 4GB internal storage. It is said to be a dual-sim smartphone and come in six colour options.
Previously, Vietnamese online retailer Techrum.vn had listed Nokia X on its website at a price of 2.2 mill to 2.5 mill VND (approximately $110).
The Finnish manufacturer has scheduled an event for February 24 -- the first day of MWC 2014 -- where it is also expected to unveil Lumia 630, Lumia 635 and Lumia 930 other than Nokia X. The company is also expected to showcase a new Asha smart feature phone at the event.
Windows 8.1 Debut | A old Windows in a new Style | Features and Review
Boot to desktop, Start button, and easier navigation
Two of the biggest complaints of Windows 8 was having to deal with the modern-style Start screen when logging in, and the lack of a Start button. For users on a traditional PC without touchscreen capabilities, it made no sense and was confusing. Microsoft listened, returning a Start button, boot to desktop, and giving users the ability to make the new modern-style interface less in your face. This should be welcomed by users of computers with a mouse and keyboard who prefer to stay in the desktop environment. It's not set up by default, but it's simple enough to configure. On the desktop, right-click the taskbar and select Properties to open "command central" for tweaking Windows to get it just the way you want it. It provides options to bypass the Start screen and go straight to the desktop when you log in, sort programs so your desktop ones appear first on the list, and disables aspects of the modern UI so it isn't as invasive.
